March 1st, 2009 The Natural Reserve of Tambopata

The Natural Reserve of Tambopata is located to east and south of Puerto Maldonado in the regions of Madre de Dios and Puno, Peru. It is one of the most diverse zones in the world. It has world record numbers in birds and butterflies´ species.

Tambopata creates 7% of the world´s humid forest territory which shelter almost 50% the world´s species; it is a perfect place for bird’s observers, researchers and everyone who wants to have a close contact with the nature, admire different forms and colors of insects, listen to the sounds of nature, sail along the river, look for macaws, parrots, gazelle, aquatic birds, herons, swallow, caimans, giant otters and tortoises.

The Reserve Zone of Tambopata has a high biological diversity: 1000 species of plants, 1200 of butterflies, 127 of reptiles and amphibians, 575 of birds, 103 of mammal, 200 of fish and it also shelters endangered species, such as: giant otter “pteronura brasiliensis”, black Lizard “melanosuchus niger”, just to mention a few. The Sandoval Lake´s biggest attraction are species of flora and fauna than can be found there and the indigenous communities which live there.
