Choquequirao located in the majestic mountain chain of Vilcabamba, is the last enclosure of Inca resistance; it is named as another Machupicchu because of the importance of its history and architectural style. It extends over an area of 2000 hectares above 3100 meters. It has a hot climate alternating with low temperatures at nights.

Choquequirao is divided into nine zones and its stone constructions are grouped in small neighborhoods. Around its principal square there is a major temple and houses of authorities. Researchers assume that this place was an important religious, political and economic center but also a commercial and cultural link between the coast, highlands and jungle.

A trip to Choquequirao is a challenging adventure that begins with an overland trip from Cusco to Cachora town (Apurimac), where a 30 km zigzag way commences and ends in the historical constructions. A round trip from Cachora to Choquequirao lasts for four days which can be done in stages by riding a horse or a mule.
